How to fix handheld camera shake without premiere or warp stabilizer

The 'I just want it less shaky' default
The handheld equivalent of dropping Warp Stabilizer on a clip and leaving Smoothness at default. Run, review, done if it's good enough.
Zoom: 5 Smoothing: 15 pass 1 vidstabdetect -> motion.trf pass 2 vidstabtransform(zoom=5, smoothing=15) + unsharp -> out.mp4 If still wobbly: bump Smoothing to 20 and re-run.
Keep the handheld feel (don't over-stabilise)

Lock it like a tripod

Stabilise then color-grade

Edge cases and what actually happens
Expecting Warp Stabilizer's rolling-shutter repair
Not availableWarp Stabilizer has a dedicated rolling-shutter ripple fix; JAD's vidstab does not. If your handheld footage has Jello wobble from a CMOS sensor, vidstab will steady the frame but leave the intra-frame skew. That specific case is where Premiere still wins.
Severe, violent shake
Reduced effectvidstab handles typical handheld jitter and walk bounce well. For violent shake (mountain-bike-on-rocks), the motion vectors get extreme and even high Zoom can't hide the compensation cleanly. A desktop NLE with subspace warp tracks harder cases better.
Detect pass fails (vidstab not in build)
errorIf the FFmpeg.wasm build lacks vidstab, the detect pass exits non-zero with Stabiliser detect pass failed (vidstab may not be present in this build). It's an environment problem, not your clip. Retry; if persistent, the build can't stabilise.
Over-cropped after raising Zoom
By designEvery point of Zoom narrows the field of view to hide edge wedges. If faces or framing get cut, you've zoomed too far for the shake level. Lower Zoom and accept a little edge wobble, or re-shoot wider next time so there's crop headroom.
Pans look laggy after raising Smoothing
ExpectedHigh Smoothing averages the path so far that intentional camera moves lag and overshoot. There's no pan-aware exemption. Lower Smoothing so the smoothed path tracks your real movement — that's the trade for keeping deliberate motion.
Output isn't the same format as input
Re-encodedUnlike Premiere where you choose export settings, JAD always outputs H.264 MP4 because the transform pass re-encodes with libx264. To change codec/container, follow with the video transcoder.
Audio out of sync on a VFR phone clip
Re-encodedThe encode normalises timing, and audio is stream-copied. On unusual variable-frame-rate phone footage you can occasionally hear drift; convert to constant frame rate first with the video transcoder, then stabilise.
Free-tier user can't open the tool
rejectedStabilisation is Pro-and-above (minTier: pro). On Free you'll get an upgrade prompt instead of a run. The Warp Stabilizer comparison still holds — Pro JAD is cheaper than a Premiere subscription for this single task.

Is this really a Warp Stabilizer replacement?
For typical handheld jitter, yes — it uses the same measure-then-warp idea via vidstab two-pass, free and in-browser. For extreme shake or rolling-shutter ripple, Premiere's Warp Stabilizer still goes further; this page is upfront about that.
Do I need Premiere or any Adobe app?
No. There's no install, no project, no timeline. Drop a clip, set Zoom and Smoothing, download an MP4. Everything runs in the browser via FFmpeg.wasm.
Which slider is like Warp Stabilizer's 'Smoothness'?
Smoothing (0–30). Low values keep a natural handheld feel; high values give a tripod-like lock, the same trade as Warp Stabilizer's Smoothness percentage. Zoom (0–15) is the auto-crop equivalent.
Does it correct rotation, or only side-to-side shake?
Both. vidstab tracks translation and rotation, so camera roll is corrected too — not just left/right/up/down, which the older deshake filter was limited to.
Will my footage upload to a server?
No. It's processed locally in your browser. Cloud stabilisers require an upload; JAD doesn't. Your handheld footage stays on your machine.
Can I keep the original resolution?
The frame stays the same resolution, but Zoom crops into the image, so a non-zero Zoom reduces effective field of view. The output pixel dimensions match the input; the visible content is cropped and rescaled by the zoom amount.
Why two passes instead of one click?
The smoothed path can't be computed until the camera's real motion is measured. Pass one measures (vidstabdetect), pass two applies (vidstabtransform). It mirrors Warp Stabilizer's analyse-then-render — there's no accurate single-pass shortcut.
What's the output codec and quality?
H.264 via libx264 at preset medium, CRF 20 — visually near-lossless for most footage. Audio is copied unchanged. If you need H.265 or a different container, run a sibling tool afterward.
How long can my clip be?
No length limit — only file size. Pro allows 10 GB per file, Pro+Media 100 GB. A long handheld take is fine as long as it's under the byte ceiling.
Why does it crop my video at all?
Stabilising shifts frames, exposing blank edges; Zoom crops in to hide them. Warp Stabilizer does the same auto-scale. Lower Zoom to keep more framing at the cost of possible edge wobble.
Can it deblur frames smeared by shake?
No. It realigns frames but can't un-blur them. The light unsharp pass recovers a little edge detail lost to warping, not motion blur from a slow shutter. Shoot faster to avoid blur.
Does it work on Free tier?
No — it's a Pro-tier tool. Free users see an upgrade prompt. Even so, Pro is far cheaper than a Premiere subscription if stabilising is your main need.
